Hamburg in Autumn: Is It Worth Visiting?

You asked, I answer. Actually, you didn’t ask – but I’ll answer anyway. Just because I love autumn in Hamburg. Just because my friends love autumn in Hamburg (well, at least some parts of it).

This piece is dedicated to all those who love autumn, to those who love Hamburg in autumn, and mostly to those who are still wondering if Hamburg is worth visiting in autumn. Let’s unwrap it. Think of it as your Christmas present arriving in November – or whenever you happen to read it.

Is Hamburg Worth Visiting in Autumn?

Long story short: oh, hell it is!

Short story long: cold, dark, rainy, and a little sad – that’s one side of Hamburg during the deep autumn months. However, just before it tips into the gloomy season, Hamburg can also be sunny, warm(ish), and completely magical.

The sun softly warms your face, golden leaves gently settle on your shoulders, and the sky paints the full spectrum of colour right before your eyes. The air is crisp and fresh, and even the drizzle and rain sound like a song!

What to Love About Autumn in Hamburg

If my above ode to autumn in Hamburg and my ballad at the end of this blog post aren’t persuasive enough, I asked my dear friends to give you even more reasons to visit Hamburg this fall and enjoy its romantic vibe!

My dear friend Swati couldn’t have described autumn in Hamburg better:

“Cafes packed with hot drinks, especially a pumpkin chai latte. Colourful leaves along the side of Alster Lake in autumn look like you’re time travelling and the world has stood still. When the winds blow, you hear the crisp rustle of the leaves. It’s never dead silent. The city centre is filled with people in shades of mustard, green, and burgundy. A walk sipping tea or coffee around Hamburg’s parks or walking trails is the perfect way to make the most of it before the winter blues hit. 🌸” And if you’re wondering how winter blues looks like in Hamburg, check out this piece!

Victoria, my friend from Mexico, loves the change of seasons:

“Coming from a place with only two functional seasons, I loved watching the leaves change colours while taking walks or riding my bike around Stadtpark. And the view of the Alster surrounded by those vibrant colours was simply beautiful. It’s the perfect setting for grabbing a snack or coffee and catching up with friends.”

Another friend of mine, Mia, can’t get enough of the autumn colours in Planten un Blomen, while Sophia swears that autumn sunsets are the most colourful of all — and just in time to catch them from the Elbphilharmonie.

Which Autumn Month is Best to Visit Hamburg?

I believe Hamburg can be enjoyable during all autumn months; however, September would suit travellers who prefer warmer temperatures and a higher chance of dry weather. October is magical for sunsets and colourful leaves, and the sun sets after 6pm, so the days are longer. Even though it gets a bit tougher in November, the shorter days still feel cosy and charming.

September in Hamburg

Indian summer usually makes an appearance in Hamburg during the second half of September. Even if there’s no real summer in Hamburg, yes, there can still be a summer vibe without the actual summer heat. That’s just how it is!

September 2025 was a bit mixed. Some days were sunny and warm, with golden sunsets and bright, fresh colours all around. There was also some rain, of course, but overall, it was solid weather to explore Hamburg in the autumn.

You can spend your September in Hamburg by exploring parks like Stadtpark or Planten un Blomen, watching golden sunsets at the Hafen (Harbour) and Alster, and enjoying cake and coffee in areas like Eimsbüttel, Schanze, Winterhude, or Eppendorf. October in Hamburg

This is when the days start to get shorter, colder, and yes, a bit wetter too. But even though the air is damp, the sunsets are actually prettier. If you fancy red and purple skies with a magical, nostalgic vibe that tugs at your soul, October in Hamburg is your month!

By the end of the month, the leaves turn beautiful shades of orange, red, and yellow, and the city looks wonderfully colourful.

Bring some proper boots and warmer clothes when you visit Hamburg in October. The weather can be tricky. One day it’s 16°C, with sunshine so warm it could give you a little tan. The next day, you wake up to 1°C and spend your 10°C day indoors, trying to avoid the wind, rain, and, well… that autumn chill.

In case the weather sucks, and the chances are high, you can get some calories in many Hamburg’s cafeterias or indulge your artsy self at Port de Lumier and many more places!

November in Hamburg

If emo were still fashionable in 2025, Hamburg’s November could be the official mascot. November can be tough. There have been many floods and wind warnings during this month for most of the years I’ve lived here. (5)

There’s something undeniably elegant and mysterious about this darkness too. If you enjoy sentimental romanticism, November in Hamburg can steal your heart. Apart from the dreadful rain, there can also be occasional late Indian summers. There have been several occasions when we’ve celebrated blue skies and 15°C in the middle of November.

Alert: Be aware that the harbour area gets flooded regularly!

My Piece of Poetry. From Love to Hamburg

In this place
It always rains
It’s like the town
Knows my moods
It’s like this place
Is my twin flame
We are one
We are the same

In this place
The clouds are grey
It’s like the city
Is in my soul’s vicinity
It’s like this town
Is my kind of a clown
We are one
We are the same
Just the same
